Eight of the world-famous Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser) Clydesdales were on display in the Village of Lewiston on Sunday afternoon.
Three large trailers wheeled the geldings, their trainers, two wagon drivers and a Dalmatian into the DiMino Lewiston Tops parking lot.
"This is an iconic, Americana-type event," owner Anthony DiMino said. "We had the Clydesdales down here I think four years ago. We only had one horse. This is the whole shebang."
Try-It Distributing arranged the visit. The eight horses are part of a team of 10 that travels the country throughout the year.
"This year just happens to be one of our local distributor's, Try-It's, it's their 90th anniversary. We were in town for the celebration for them, their 90th year as an Anheuser-Busch wholesaler," Anheuser-Busch's Dave Thomas said. "We thought this was a great opportunity to bring them out, to let the people up here see the horses."
The Clydesdales were greeted with hearty cheers from hundreds of onlookers. Once hooked into their fleet pose, they marched down Center Street to visit other Try-It Distributing clients, including Gallo Coal Fire Kitchen and the Lewiston Stone House. At each stop, crowds assembled to get a glimpse of the geldings, or even take selfies.
The Anheuser-Busch team received an escort courtesy of the Village of Lewiston Police Department and the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.
Thomas said there are three Clydesdale teams that travel about 300 days a year, making 200 appearances. Horses travel from home bases in Merrimack, New Hampshire; St. Louis; and Fort Collins, Colorado. For each performance, two Clydesdales are given a day off to rest.
