The Lewiston Community Lions Club is sponsoring a peace poster contest with the Village of Lewiston Recreation Department.
For the past 31 years, Lions clubs around the world have proudly sponsored the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art contest for kids encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace.
The theme of the 2018-19 peace poster contest is "Kindness Matters." Students, ages 11-13, are eligible to participate. All entries must be submitted to Lewiston Community Lions Club by Nov. 1. A local winner will be picked and receive $100.
Each poster will be judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme.
Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand-prizewinner and 23 merit award winners.
International winners will be notified on or before Feb. 1, 2019. One international grand-prizewinner will receive $5,000 and a trip to a special award ceremony. Each of the 23 merit award winners will receive an award of $500 and a certificate of achievement.
In addition to the peace poster contest, Lions International has an essay contest for visually impaired students. The theme is "Kindness Matters." Students who are visually impaired and who are ages 11-13 are eligible to participate. Each essay must be submitted with a completed entry form (available through Lewiston Community Lions Club and Village of Lewiston Recreation Department). Essays must be no longer than 500 words in length, submitted in English. Entries are to be submitted to Lewiston Community Lions Club by Nov. 1.
The Lewiston Rec. Dept. is located at the Red Brick Municipal Building on North Fourth and Onondaga streets. Posters can be delivered from 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 2-23 and Thursdays, Oct. 4-25. Call 716-754-1990 for more information.
