From Oct. 26 through Nov. 4, almost 50 opera events will take place in WNY in recognition of "National Opera Week." This nationwide event is celebrated in numerous cities across the country including here locally. Audiences will find diverse and entertaining choices that range from light classical, to full operas, concerts, classes and more.
Coordinating and promoting the dozens of exciting opera events offered to the community is the Erwin H. Johnson Memorial Fund Inc. This year's list of participants include the ABC Bel Canto Choir, Body Glyphix Studio, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, Buffalo Choral Arts Society, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Canadian Opera Company, Chautauqua Youth Chorale, Cheektowaga Community Symphony Orchestra, Eastman Opera Theatre, Erwin H. Johnson Memorial Fund, Fredonia School of Music, Friends of Vienna, Music Academy of WNY, Niagara Arts and Cultural Center, Nickel City Opera, Opera Atelier, OperaBuffs of WNY, Rochester Lyric Opera, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Screening Room and Shea's Performing Arts Center.
Concerts, HD screenings, productions and free lectures will be offered to the public.
Complete printed programs of all performances will be available at all public libraries after Oct. 10, and can be downloaded and printed at www.celebrateoperawny.org.
On this day, the EHJ Memorial Fund will host a "Proclamation Day." Local government officials have decreed National Opera Week in WNY/Niagara. The proclamation and opera week will be acknowledged at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Audubon Branch Library, 350 John J. Audubon Parkway, Amherst. Speakers will be present to explain all things National Opera Week. That will be followed by entertainment.
Then, on Friday, Oct. 26 (dusk until midnight), the Peace Bridge will be lit in burgundy and gold to reference the stage in opera houses and recognize this international national event.
The EHJ Memorial Fund Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit corporation supporting and promoting opera in Western New York - and especially the idea of a dedicated performing arts space for opera and ballet.
