On Saturday, before Niagara-Wheatfield's football game versus Frontier, the team and members of the Niagara-Wheatfield football family represented the Michael Ziegler "Heart of a Falcon" Scholarship award in the Out of the Darkness walk at Delaware Park in Buffalo.
The walk raised money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which is used for new research, creating educational programs, advocating for public policy and supporting survivors of suicide loss. The goal for donations was set at $185,000. As of Monday, the total amount raised was $215,402 by those who participated in the walk.
The "Heart of a Falcon" scholarship was set up this past spring to carry on the memory of Ziegler, who passed away this past winter. The scholarships are awarded to one male and female senior student athlete of Niagara-Wheatfield High School who has been accepted into a college or trade school, and earned a N-W Red Varsity Letter or been a three-sport athlete for a minimum of three high school years.
