The Auxiliary of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will hold its annual chicken and rib dinner from 4-7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at the Bakery Restaurant, 3004 Niagara St. Guests may dine in or take out. The meal includes a chicken leg quarter, ribs, mashed potatoes, vegetable, roll and beverage.
Tickets are $17 and can be purchased in the Medical Center Gift Shop or by calling 278-4159. Proceeds will benefit patients of the medical center and Schoellkopf Health Center.
Memorial to Promote Heart Health at Harvest & Hops Fest
Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will promote healthy hearts and showcase a new project on smoking cessation at the Harvest and Hops Festival.
Physicians from Memorial's family practice residency program will join Kelley Gombert, R.N., of the Heart Center of Niagara's cardiac catheterization team, at an interactive informational exhibit that will highlight heart attack signs and symptoms, as well as risk factors that contribute to high blood pressure and heart disease.
"We want to stress the importance of the doctor-patient relationship with an emphasis on communication and how we must all be our own best advocate," Gombert said. "Niagara County is fortunate to have a fully established and working cardiac catheterization lab where both diagnostic and emergent cardiac angiograms and interventions are done.
"Time is muscle. You only have one heart and we want to help you to keep it pumping smoothly."
Located at The Heart Center of Niagara on the Memorial Medical Center campus, the cardiac catheterization lab is jointly operated by Memorial, Catholic Health, Kaleida Health and Erie County Medical Center.
Also on display at the festival will be a new project on smoking cessation that emphasizes the harmful consequences of smoking. The project focuses on why quitting is difficult because of addictive elements such as nicotine.
The project was led by Memorial's Dr. Kajanan Kukan and several other resident physicians. Kukan and students from the Lake Erie College of Medicine will distribute brochures detailing strategies for successful smoking cessation and will provide free blood pressure screenings.
