Last week, the Thursdays on the Water concert series at Gratwick Park in North Tonawanda came to a close with the featured act That '80s Hair Band.
The band's collection of heavy classic rock drew a quality turnout for the last show of the summer.
Back in June, City of North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur Pappas promised this summer's weather would cooperate a whole lot better than last year's series, which saw several rain outs. Pappas was right on with his promise, as each Thursday drew fair weather, which in turn brought out residents from not only North Tonawanda, but all over Niagara County.
With the steady flow of attendance throughout the year, Twin Cities Meals on Wheels proudly announced that donations from parking doubled from last year's total.
Also at the finale, the North Tonawanda Common Council was honored with a plaque for their efforts and support of the series.
Alderman Eric Zadzilka praised the event and series promoter Jessie Gooch.
Zadzilka said, "This event is something that we've wanted to see for a while. We're very proud to support the event. We want to thank everyone who came here, all the sponsors, and for Jessie's perseverance here to see this all come to fruition. ... Jessie's had a vision and that's what we want to keep going with for years to come."
Pappas was also grateful for the attendees, as well as Gooch.
"Jessie and your crew - thank you for this award. The one thing that I do want to mention is last year when he approached the city, he had some rough going and he had to overcome a lot of obstacles and one being the weather. Boy, Thursday nights last year, it rained just about every Thursday. But, boy, this year he's making up for it.
"The City of North Tonawanda is so happy and so proud to have these concerts here on the beautiful Niagara River," Pappas said.
Along with the music, each Thursday there was also a classic car show, which drew a respectable attendance each week.
