Total donations raised doubled from 2017, with all proceeds going toward canonization of Father Nelson Baker
On Sunday, more than 200 runners and walkers participated in the third annual Father Baker Father's Day 5K. The day brought avid runners, families and businesses to South Park Lake to run or walk the 3.1 miles around the park and Botanical Gardens.
This year's 2018 race honorees included Terese Scofidio, CEO of Baker Victory Services, who was recognized for her leadership in the community. The family of Catherine Drilling, who passed away in December, accepted the Patricia Kearns Community Service Award on Drilling's behalf, honoring her commitment to volunteer work in her community. Finally, Te Caulfield of South Buffalo was honored with the Father Baker Race Committee Honoree Award for his dedicated efforts organizing the Father Baker Father's Day 5K, as well as several other races in South Buffalo.
The third holding of the Father Baker Father's Day 5K was a successful year, with funds raised nearly doubling, to go toward the canonization of Father Nelson Baker. Monsignor Paul Burkard of Our Lady of Victory has been leading the canonization effort, a lengthy and expensive process that began more than 30 years ago.
Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns created the Father Baker Father's Day 5K three years ago, as the New York State Assemblyman representing that area, as a way to hold a family-oriented event to help the effort to bring Baker into sainthood. Current Assemblyman Erik Bohen has continued to be a supporter of the race and was present to help award the day's winners.
More than a dozen local businesses and organizations sponsored the 2018 Father Baker Father's Day 5K.
