$602,168 will help feed hungry families across WNY
During the month of February, Wegmans cashiers asked customers to make a small donation to help the Food Bank of WNY at 11 stores throughout Erie, Niagara and Chautauqua counties.
"Check Out Hunger" allows customers to donate $2 $3, $5 or any other amount at checkout, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Food Bank of WNY.
"For 25 years, we've been running a 'Check Out Hunger' campaign, but we continue to be amazed by the commitment of our cashiers and the generosity of our customers each year," said Mike Keating, senior VP, Buffalo Wegmans Food Markets. "This vital program will allow the Food Bank of WNY to provide over 3 million meals to hungry families in our neighborhoods and communities."
Tara A. Ellis, president and CEO of the Food Bank of WNY, said, "The Food Bank of WNY is grateful for the incredible partnership of Wegmans Food Markets as we fight hunger in our community. Again and again, their generous customers answer the call to help their neighbors in need. Their phenomenal support allows us to continue our mission of providing nutritious food to the hungry in Western New York."
In addition to money raised for hunger relief, Wegmans donates more than 14.5 million pounds of food to local food banks, food pantries and soup kitchens in all the communities it serves. As part of the "Perishable Pick Up Program," Wegmans employees have been choosing and packing items like baked goods, yogurt, cheeses, cold cuts, fruits and veggies - all safe and wholesome to eat, but no longer saleable - for daily pick-up by over 300 local food pantries. It's another way Wegmans helps to fight hunger and reduce food waste.
