Town of Niagara Lions scholarship award up for grabs

The Town of Niagara Lions Club Inc., beginning its 65th year of service to the community, has announced the Lee Corra Scholarship Award for the 2018 school year is up for grabs. Application forms can be picked up from counseling offices at Niagara-Wheatfield High School, Niagara Catholic High School or for Town of Niagara residents attending a different high school, or by contacting Chairman Theresa White on the Town of Niagara Facebook page.
The scholarship committee is made up of Town of Niagara Lions Jackie Boyce, Pat Finley, Bob Shively, Phil Silliman, John Teixeira, Nancy Tierney and White. Applicants will have until Friday, April 8 to complete the forms and submit them to their respective school counselor and mail them by Friday, April 20.
Niagara Lions are offering this scholarship, in honor of Corra and Fratello, both deceased Town of Niagara Lions Club charter members, to a Town of Niagara resident attending any regional high school or to a student who is attending Niagara-Wheatfield High School regardless of residence location.
The applicant must also be a senior student eligible for graduation in this current year; be successfully completing a college entrance program of study with an overall grade of 85 percent or better during their four years of high school preparation; show evidence of leadership, character and service to school and community; submit a 500-word or more essay on the topic named on the application; and lastly, provide proof of acceptance from the applicant's college of choice.
The winner will be chosen from three finalists interviewed by the committee. In the event of a tie, financial need will be considered.
This will be the 45th year the Town of Niagara Lions have offered the scholarship; the amount awarded now totaling $47,000.
