Come next week, the Lewiston-Porter School District invites residents to come and experience a growing campaign: "One District, One Book."
Now in its second year, the district will host its much-anticipated "One District, One Book" community reveal from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the Lewiston Public Library.
Over past weeks, students from the Lewiston-Porter Primary Education Center and Intermediate Education Center and their families participated in voting to choose this year's choice of young readers from two selections: "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" by Beverly Cleary and "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White.
Lewiston-Porter's "One District, One Book" committee is a group of district parents and teacher volunteers working in collaboration with readtothem.org, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting family literacy. Members said, "This program is meant to connect families, school and the community through a shared reading experience."
"One District, One Book" focuses on building a literal community of readers. In the Lewiston-Porter community, organizers said that involves everyone - students, parents, teachers and administrators, even local businesses - participating in this campaign. Local sponsors in the effort include the Lewiston-Porter PTA, Orange Cat Coffee Co., DiMino Tops Lewiston and Favorite's Pizzeria.
Come Wednesday, stop by the Lewiston library for this year's winning book announcement, plus a host of family-fun activities, cake and refreshments, entertainment by the Lew-Port boy band No Vacancy, an appearance by Lance the Lew-Port mascot, and a special surprise for the first 100 students.
In addition, those attending are invited to partake in "One District, One Book" celebration dinner discounts on Jan. 24 at area restaurants. Included are kids-eat-free specials with an adult entrée purchase at Apple Granny, The Brickyard Pub & B.B.Q. and Tin Pan Alley. Also a 50 percent discount off kid's meals with an adult entree purchase at The Spicey Pickle, 700 Bistro and Ray's Tavern. Families only need to present the flyers distributed at the event as proof of attendance to partake in the discounts.
And through their involvement, families will help to further spur a growing community of readers at Lewiston-Porter.
"When an entire school reads the same book, you spark a communitywide conversation that inspires a rich appreciation of literature and lifelong reading," the "One District, One Book" committee commented.
