Bigger, grander and more elaborate continues to be the theme at Artpark.
Executive Director Sonia Clark has announced a casting call for a new musical production of "The Odyssey" will take place from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at The Kavinoky Theatre on the D'Youville Campus. It's expected the show will feature more than 100 people.
"The Odyssey" will be performed on the Mainstage Theater from Aug. 4-5. It is a 90-minute original musical adaptation of Homer's classic story as adapted by Todd Almond and Lear Debessonet (originally produced by the Public Theatre NY). The show will join professional talent with local artists and community groups. It will be directed by New York City-based director Roger Danforth, with Paschal Frisina III and Carin Jean White serving as associate directors, and music direction by Patrick Towey.
Artpark & Company said "The Odyssey" "will take audiences on a fantastic adventure, full of joy and danger, as we celebrate one of the great sagas of world literature. Join us as Odysseus and his crew face dangers on the high seas, fight monsters and witches, and endure hardships and joys as they fight their way home from the Trojan War. Using the magic of song and dance, love and tears, this great adventure will delight the whole family as citizens from all over Western New York come together to create a play that truly embodies 'community,' reaching out to people and changing their lives."
A variety of roles are available, including leads. All ethnicities are desired and will be welcomed, as will persons with disabilities. No role has specific vocal requirements. All performers will be asked to bring a sense of play to the development of the project. Musical instruments and/or percussion skills, while not required, are a plus, as is rapping and/or performing spirituals.
Interested auditioners should prepare 24 to 32 bars of either a pop/folk tune or a musical theater piece. Music selections should have either recorded accompaniment, or sheet music to be played by the provided accompanist. Auditioners should also prepare a one-minute monologue, and come dressed in movement clothes in preparation for learning a dance combination.
Contact casting director Kate LoConti to set up an audition time ([email protected] or 716-510-0625).
Rehearsals will begin in mid-July.
