Canisius College and the Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo present "One Person Can Make a Difference," a lecture by Jeannie Smith, daughter of Irena Gut Opdyke, at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, in the Grupp Fireside Lounge on the second floor of the Richard E. Winter ᾿42 Student Center.
The lecture is in honor of UN Holocaust Remembrance Day. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a reception.
Smith's lecture will focus on the remarkable story of her mother's efforts to save Jews in World War II in German-occupied Poland. Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, named Irena Gut Opdyke to its list of Righteous Among Nations. This is a database used to convey the gratitude of the State of Israel and the Jewish people to those who took great risks to save Jews during the Holocaust.
Gut Opdyke also received Israel's Medal of Honor, was honored by the Vatican, was posthumously awarded the Commander's Cross from the Polish government and the Courage to Care Award from the Anti-Defamation League.
The lecture is sponsored by the permanent chair of Polish culture at Canisius College. Additional support comes from the Canisius College department of history, the Daemen College Polish studies program, the Polish Arts Club of Buffalo and the Polish Legacy Project.
