Saint Bonaventure University provides funding
WBFO-FM 88.7 has established a new veterans news desk with funding from Saint Bonaventure University. The desk began airing reports this month.
"Western New York has a large, diverse veteran community. We are very pleased to be able to focus more attention on the issues that this population faces and to educate the public about the important ways veterans are contributing to our community," said Brian Meyer, WBFO senior director of news and public affairs.
"Aligning ourselves with such a respected institution like WBFO simply made sense," said Tom Missel, interim vice president for university relations. "We really admire WBFO's commitment to covering issues that are important to veterans and hope that our sponsorship sends a signal to men and women leaving the service that St. Bonaventure is committed to helping them transition successfully back to civilian life."
WBFO-FM 88.7 has the largest radio newsroom in Western New York, and its staff has more than 350 years of combined experience. Michael Mroziak, an award-winning journalist who has two decades of experience in Western New York media, is serving as the lead reporter on the veterans news desk.
WBFO established its content-specific news desks in 2015 and now has five established news desks: education; business and economy; arts and culture; health and wellness; and veterans. By focusing on a specific subject, the desks provide a powerful opportunity for radio journalists to address major issues and topics within the community, which, the station said, are often underreported by other media sources. Content from each news desk also appears on www.wbfo.org. The website also expands on stories heard on WBFO with additional material.
The WNED | WBFO family of stations broadcasts PBS, NPR and classical music programming throughout the Western New York and Southern Ontario regions. Member-supported stations include WNED-TV (PBS), WBFO-FM 88.7 (NPR), Classical 94.5 WNED, WNED Thinkbright @ Create and WNED PBS Kids 24/7. WNED-TV is also a national producer of award-winning documentaries. Additional information about WNED ǀ WBFO can be found at www.wned.org.
