Creative projects by individuals of OUN day programs
Opening Thursday, Dec. 7, the Carnegie Art Center in North Tonawanda will host a monthlong exhibition featuring the works of the Opportunities Unlimited day programs.
The central collection of this exhibit, titled "Gimme The Beat, Boys, and Free My Soul," inspired by the song "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray, was the theme of creative workshops conducted through the fine arts program at OUN.
Event organizers said, "With so much that is hard to understand, this song addresses the frustration and a need for refuge that many individuals feel, but are unable to express."
The opening reception runs from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Dec. 7. The show continues through Dec. 30.
Additional collections include:
A series of multimedia "Quiet Collages" created while artists listened to the music of Debussy, Brahms, Rutter, Nat King Cole, Jobim and others. Working with soft sensory and upcycled materials resulted in a series of visually quiet, calming collages.
Photographs taken "behind the scenes" at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, Our Lady of Czestochowa Church in North Tonawanda and the Arts and Media theater at Niagara County Community College in Sanborn. Photographers were able to explore those venues from the performer's point of view without the distraction of the sounds of performances.
"Reaching Out Through Photography" photographers from OUN Day Programs visited the Lockport Fire Department, Bergholz Fire Co. and the Town of Niagara Police Department. Photography was used as a tool for understanding, with a goal of helping individuals become more familiar with first responders in a non-emergency situation. In turn, first responders became more familiar with them. Some of these photos are now used in disability awareness training for first responders in New York state.
These creative projects were funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and administered through Arts Services Initiative of Western New York.
The Carnegie Art Center is located at 240 Goundry St., North Tonawanda. It is open from 6-9 p.m. Thursdays and noon until 3 p.m. Saturdays.
