Town Supervisor Nathan McMurray said on social media this week that a national corporation is eyeballing Grand Island for a truck stop.
"Today a team of people from a national travel stop corporation came to Town Hall. They want to put a massive truck stop on Grand Island," McMurray posted on social media Nov. 14. "This was my first contact with anyone from this group, so I felt the need to set them straight.
"I said no."
"I told them - in no uncertain terms - that a truck stop of that scale is diametrically opposed to my vision of conservation. Despite the potential financial benefits of a huge truck stop and an endless stream of truckers, I said no. I will not support it. A truck stop goes against everything I've worked so hard to achieve as Supervisor."
He didn't say where the truck stop would have been located.
McMurray said he would advocate for small businesses, farmers and preservation of green space."
"We should celebrate Grand Island's local history, food, and ecology. We don't need a sprawling smoggy source of light pollution at the center of it."
The next regular meeting of the Grand Island Town Board will be at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, in Grand Island Town Hall, 2255 Baseline Road.
