United Way of San Juan will distribute funds in community to relief victims after impact of Hurricane Maria
The United Way of Greater Niagara received a check for $1,829 from General Motors Plant in Lockport to be sent to Puerto Rico to assist the victims of Hurricane Maria. UWGN reached out to Fondos Unidos of San Juan (United Way of San Juan) in Puerto Rico to benefit from these funds and distribute them in the community after Hurricane Maria devastated the island.
"We are proud to partner with General Motors. They have a strong commitment to our community. Their donations to helping the people in Puerto Rico is not surprising, because of their compassion and willing to help people in need," said Connie Brown, UWGN president and CEO.
GM Plant Manager Bill Tiger said, "On Friday, Oct. 6, GMCH Lockport and UAW Local 686 conducted a gate collection for the people impacted by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. This drive was initiated by employees of the plant after seeing the devastation caused by the historic hurricane, and (we) asked what can we do to help. In addition to the money raised, one of our UAW members, Lumi Irizarry, volunteered to be part of a team to go to Puerto Rico to assist in the recovery."
Samuel González, president of United Way of Puerto Rico, said, "United Way of Puerto Rico appreciates the donation of $1,829 made by the employees of the General Motors plant in the City of Lockport, New York. These funds will help us continue to assist the community after the impact Hurricane Maria left in our island. We are working hard so that our affiliated nonprofits partners can return to normal again, providing the essential services needed by families who lost everything after this devastating hurricane. General Motor's strong commitment and support will help us rebuild a better and stronger Puerto Rico than before."
United Way of Greater Niagara's mission is to invest in programs that focus on education, health and income, and that deliver measurable results to improve the community today and strengthen it for tomorrow. UWGN touches over 70,000 people in the Niagara County community every year. It also supports 25 agencies and 42 different programs throughout the county.
