St. Peter R.C. Church was filled with parishioners Sunday, as the congregation celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving and dedication of almost $2 million worth of renovations.
The Most Rev. Richard J. Malone, bishop of Buffalo, was the guest celebrant. He blessed the recently completed additions, which include a new elevator and side entrance connecting the church and elementary school; the addition of two more classrooms; a new kitchen; a state-of-the-art media center and library; and handicapped-accessible bathrooms.
The additions came as a result of the multiyear "Campaign for St. Peter." Held in conjunction with the diocese's "Upon This Rock" campaign, more than $1.5 million was raised for the project, with another $757,000 collected to support the Buffalo Catholic Church.
At the start of Mass, St. Peter's Rev. Monsignor David G. LiPuma extended his appreciation and gratitude to the parishioners and community for their support of the campaign. He also pointed out a plaque in honor of Timothy Zayac, a project worker who tragically lost his life while working on site last April.
Inside the school, the media center and library were dedicated to the recently retired Sandra Jordan, who spent 40 years at the school on Center and North Sixth streets in Lewiston. Jordan worked as a librarian, technology director and busing and transportation scheduler.
Mrs. Jordan and her family were on hand Sunday. She received accolades from Malone, flowers from Principal Maureen Ingham, and hugs from former students and colleagues. The marker hanging in her honor is a remembrance of Jordan's famous greeting: "Good morning, all you wonderful children."
An elaborate luncheon followed, with serving stations in the new-look cafeteria and inside the school gymnasium.
St. Peter's R.C. School has a current enrollment of 185 students.
