HAL volunteers wash & wax sculptures
A group of dedicated Historical Association of Lewiston volunteers was out in force Saturday to wash and wax Lewiston's two landmark statues: the Freedom Crossing Monument on the waterfront, and the Tuscarora Heroes Monument at Portage Road and Center Street. The volunteers perform the annual maintenance to preserve the luster and quality of the bronze sculptures.
Attendees included Niagara County Legislator Becky Wydysh, Village of Lewiston Deputy Mayor Bruce Sutherland, Village of Lewiston Trustee Vic Eydt, Brian Beebe, Sandy Yates, Tim Henderson, Lisa Ohanessian-Mies, Leandra Collesano, Skip and Pam Hauth, Pete Henderson and Sue Geissler, Dan Guariglia, Anthony Gabby and Keith Sargent.
In the second photo, Wydysh is shown applying a light coat of wax to the Laura sculpture. Laura is the principal character in the book "Freedom Crossing," a historical fiction by Margaret Goff Clark that takes place in Lewiston. The book is the best-selling Underground Railroad book of all time.
