The Breast Cancer Network of WNY has announced a series of events that are open to the public and running throughout the month of October to commemorate breast cancer awareness month. BCN will kick off breast cancer awareness month with a party, sponsored by Peak Performance Chiropractic and WNY Imaging. "Girls Night Out" is scheduled for 6-11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at The Grapevine Banquet facility, 333 Dick Road, Depew.
"Girls Night Out" is a fundraising event for BCN. The night includes local vendors, hors d'oeuvres, grab bags, a wine wall, dancing with DJ Milk, a pink carpet of fame, Amherst casino night, basket raffles and drawings. Tickets are $20 pre-sale or $25 at the door. To purchase tickets, visit bcnwny.org.
Throughout October, BCN will host several educational seminars to raise awareness and educate survivors and the public on various topics related to breast cancer. The schedule is as follows:
•Oct. 3 - First of four scheduled healthy cooking classes for breast cancer survivors. Other dates are Oct. 17 and 26. Location: Breast Cancer Network, 3297 Walden Ave., Depew.
•Oct. 5 - Genetic testing and counseling seminar with Laura Fisher of Windsong Radiology
Location: Windsong Radiology, 55 Spindrift Drive, Williamsville.
•Oct. 10 - Nutrition and breast cancer education program with Carol DeNysschen, Ph.D. Location: Breast Cancer Network.
•Oct. 21 - 24th annual breast cancer survivors education day symposium. Education day is a half-day event that includes some of the most prestigious speakers from the cancer care community. This year the focus of the speakers will be "A Breast Cancer Survivor's Guide to Wellness." Attendees will learn about topics such as nutrition, modifying behavior habits, the benefits of tai chi and exercise, and new developments in breast cancer research.
"Education day is one of our most well-attended events," said Bev Jasinski, BCN's board president. "Attendees always leave with a ton of information that they may not have not have learned about if they had not attended. We enjoy being able to connect cancer care experts with the people that are going through or have already gone through breast cancer."
BCN will also participate in several fundraising events that are being held on its behalf.
Jones said they send board members and survivors to these events to promote awareness, screenings and wellness activities for survivors. He said, "There is so much that people don't realize about breast cancer. We are grateful for these opportunities to increase public knowledge of the disease."
