Obituary: Gertrude (Cannon) Wilson

Fri, Jun 23rd 2017 03:50 pm
Gertrude (Cannon) Wilson went to be with our Lord, June 18, 2017.
She was born in Buffalo on Oct. 6, 1923, but considered Grand Island her lifelong home. Gert was part of one of the old Island families whose farm was on East River. She loved spending time by the river with brothers and cousins.
She was part of the first graduating class of Sidway School.
As World War II broke out, she along with other Grand Island girlfriends stepped up to support the troops. She was a member of The Islander staff - the forerunner of the lsland Dispatch. They sent news of the Island to the hometown boys.
After the war, she married Arthur Wilson and settled down to start a family on the Island. Gert was a crackerjack secretary for many years and loving mother to her three children.
She became a widow in 1974, and lived strongly and independently until her passing.
She is fondly remembered as one who would care for others unselfishly. Through the years, she faithfully and lovingly helped family members and others in need.
She enjoyed her travels with her sister-in-law, Jane Cannon, and came home with many entertaining stories and yard sale treasures.
She is survived by her three children, Daniel (Judy) Wilson, Kathleen Ballester and David (Susan) Wilson.
Also surviving are six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Friends may call Saturday, June 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kaiser Funeral Home, 1950 Whitehaven Road, with a memorial service at Kaiser's immediately following.
Memorials may be made to the Island Presbyterian Church, 1822 Huth Road, Grand Island, NY 14072.
