Two students of the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy were recently presented with $500 scholarships from the Judges and Police Executives Conference of Niagara County Inc.
Jessica M. Saraceno of North Tonawanda, and Jesse A. Williams of Lockport, received awards from Niagara County Undersheriff Michael J. Filicetti on Tuesday afternoon at Niagara University, where the NCLEA is headquartered.
Saraceno and Williams are pre-employment candidates enrolled in the 66th police academy class, which commenced training Sept. 5. To be considered for the scholarship, students must also demonstrate community involvement, extracurricular activity, consistent academic achievement and leadership potential.
The mission of the Judges and Police Executives Conference of Niagara County Inc. is to promote and build up an official and mutual friendship and cooperation between the judiciary, police, law enforcement and related agencies operating in Niagara County, neighboring counties and bordering provinces in Canada.
The NCLEA holds two academies each year, one for part-time students and another for full-time students.
NU is the only four-year, private college in New York to host a full-time police academy.
Coordination of the program on campus is undertaken by the university's office of continuing education and criminal justice department.
