Power Authority: New additions, crowd favorites at 2017 Wildlife Festival

Wildlife and science shows, a glimpse of Tuscarora culture and a variety of kid-friendly conservation activities will top the New York Power Authority's 32nd annual Wildlife Festival on Sept. 23-24 at the Niagara Power Vista visitor center in Lewiston.
The family festival, co-sponsored by the Niagara County Federation of Conservation Clubs, will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (rain or shine) both days
New this year is a Tuscarora tent, featuring the Niagara River Iroquois Dancers. Crafts and activities will highlight Tuscarora culture with cornhusk dolls, beading, weaving and lacrosse.
Another new addition will be Dr. B performing his "Science on Stage" shows highlighting the tiger beetle. Dr. B will appear in a life-size costume of the beetle found in New York to educate attendees on its size, color and distinguishing characteristics. He will focus on the habitat in the local region/area.
Returning Wildlife Festival favorites include:
•Wildlife Shows: The Primate Sanctuary with Carmen Presti, Nickel City Reptiles & Exotics with Jeff Musial, Hawk Creek Wildlife Center, Skyhunter Birds of Prey, AWARE animal rehabilitation center, Buffalo Zoomobile, Erie County SPCA Wildlife Department, police K-9 demonstrations and more.
•Conservation Exhibitors: New York State Department of Environmental Conservation divisions, New York State Parks Interpretive Center, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and various clubs, including sportsmen's, trappers, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
•Activities: Shooting trailer, fishing pond, crossbow (age-appropriate), archery, crafts, safety identifications, face-painting, rock-climbing wall, chainsaw art, fishing demonstrations and more.
Children up to age 15 can enter a random drawing at the popular fishing pond operated by the Niagara River Anglers for a chance to win fishing gear. The Erie County Sheriff's Department will prepare free safety identification cards from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the children's entertainment tent (No. 4).
Guests can visit the Power Vista's all-new, innovative exhibits. The interactive adventure from the New York Power Authority is designed for inquisitive minds of all ages.
Understand electricity through the eyes of pioneers Nikolai Tesla and Thomas Edison, as well as modern-day scientists.
Take a virtual rollercoaster ride in the "Power Up!" 4-D simulator.
See what it takes to operate a power plant. A simulated challenge provides the chance to operate a plant and control the state's transmission network.
Watch a hair-raising experience during scheduled demonstrations of the Van de Graaff generator.
Visitors can enjoy free rides on the Discover Niagara Shuttle to the Lewiston Harvest Festival, Gorge Discovery Center and other area attractions. For more information on the Discover Niagara Shuttle and its route, visit www.discoverniagarashuttle.com.
The Power Vista is located at 5777 Lewiston Road. Parking is free and will be available in the Power Vista parking lot and adjacent lots at Niagara University.

The Niagara Power Vista is a free hands-on science playground at the Niagara Power Project, with more than 50 state-of-the-art interactive exhibits. Operated by the New York Power Authority, the visitor center is designed for inquisitive minds of all ages with special emphasis on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) concepts and careers. The Power Vista is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, excluding some holidays.
