Fri, Sep 1st 2017 05:05 pm
Erna P. Wasse, formerly of Grand Island, died peacefully Aug. 30, 2017.
Erna was predeceased by Erna and Peter Peters (parents), Alfred A. Wasse (son) and Siegfried A. Wasse (husband).
She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Tan (Robert) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; grandson Harrison Tan; brothers Henry Peters (Cathy) of Port Colborne, Ontario; Peter Peters (Beverly) of Newcastle, Ontario; Barry Peters (Tina) of St. Catharines, Ontario, and Erich Peters (Tracey) of Pelham, Ontario.
Born in the Ukraine, Erna immigrated to Vineland, Canada, in 1948, and finally settled in St. Catharines in 1950. She graduated from Merritton-Linden High School and went on to work at Imperial Life Insurance. Later she met her dear husband and life partner, Siegfried, at a dance at the German Social Club Heidelberg.
In 1964, they married and moved to Buffalo. In 1988, she became a U.S. citizen. She was a stay-at-home mom who devoted her talents to volunteer activities at St. Timothy Lutheran Church and Sidway School. In later years, she worked part-time at Commercial Chemicals and loved her position as administrative assistant.
Despite all that life threw at her, Erna always maintained a sense of humor that put family and friends as ease. She will always be remembered for her love of reading, her candid demeanor, her love of a good argument, and her strength in the darkest times. Her immediate family will hold a private memorial, in her honor, in North Carolina where she lived the last seven years.
