Dr. Gurteshwar Rana to join program's medical staff in 2018
A surgeon with several publications and significant research to her credit will be joining the medical staff at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.
Venkat Kolli, M.D., the medical center's chief of surgery, announced Thursday that Gurteshwar Rana, M.D., will become a member of the surgical team upon completing a yearlong fellowship in advanced gastrointestinal and minimally invasive surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
This highly competitive fellowship helps talented surgeons further master advanced techniques in minimally invasive foregut surgery, bariatric surgery and general surgery. The fellowship also reinforces skills in flexible endoscopy, mannometry and Bravo pH monitoring.
"Dr. Rana will bring exceptional skills and knowledge to our minimally invasive and bariatric surgery programs," Kolli said. "Her research has been published in the American Journal of Surgery, the Journal of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and other medical journals, and has been the subject of nearly a dozen presentations in the United States and internationally."
A Vancouverite, Rana received her Bachelor of Science degree in genetics from the University of British Columbia. She graduated from Ross University School of Medicine (Dominica, West Indies) with highest honors. Subsequently, she completed a five-year general surgery residency at Providence Hospital/Michigan State University, Southfield, Michigan. During her fifth year, she served as the chief academic surgical resident and was presented the "Teacher of the Year" award.
Rana is a member of the American College of Surgeons, Midwest Surgical Association, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic surgeons (SAGES) and American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
Both Rana and her husband, David Malkan, are avid environmentalists and enjoy activities that allow them to appreciate the outdoors, including hiking, camping, rock climbing and kayaking.
She will join Kolli and Dr. Vikram Vattipally as an advanced GI/bariatric surgeon upon completion of her fellowship.
