On Thursday, the Aquarium of Niagara revealed the name of its new harbor seal pup: Zara.
Over the past week, the public was tasked with choosing between Zara and Dill. The former received the most votes.
The name Zara was first suggested by Aquarium of Niagara Executive Director Gary Siddall. He said he thought Zara would be a perfect way to represent the pup's mother, Zoey.
Harbor seal pups wean between four to six weeks. Zara will soon enter that stage. Her next milestone will be eating fish and developing a trusting relationship with aquarium trainers.
The Aquarium of Niagara celebrated the successful birth of Zara on Thursday, July 13. Zoey, 8, went into labor after nearly 11 months of gestation, and the pup was born just after midnight.
Zoey, rescued and deemed non-releasable, has been at the Aquarium of Niagara since 2012 after undergoing surgery to correct a severe inner ear infection.
Zara was sired by 9-year-old Pickles, who joined the Aquarium of Niagara in May of 2016 from SeaWorld San Antonio.
