On June 10, the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston held its annual youth fishing derby at the Niagara River Anglers Association Fishing Preserve on Balmer Road in Youngstown. The event was open to children from the townships of Lewiston and Porter. This year, 73 children participated and more than 200 people were in attendance.
"The annual fishing derby encompasses the Kiwanis Club mission of changing the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time," derby organizer Rob Nichols said. "Our club strives to bring the community together around family-centric activities that are fun."
Funding for the derby came from proceeds from the annual Niagara County Peach Festival.
"We are a volunteer organization; everything that we make from the festival goes right back into the community," Kiwanis Club President Mark Briglio said. "We support numinous nonprofit originations and children-centric events like this."
Derby winners included: Keeydon Patterson, who caught the largest fish at 16 inches and was the first-place winner in the 7 to 9 years old category; Elijah Veltri, who won the 10 to 12 years old group with a 13-inch catch; and Kaden Brown, who captured first place in the 4 to 6 years old category with a 12-inch fish.
