'Sound of the Community' with Cyro Baptista kicks off at Artpark

Mon, Jul 24th 2017 07:45 pm
Internationally acclaimed percussionist Cyro Baptista is conducting free daily workshops at Artpark this week with his collaborators, Billy Martin (Medeski Martin & Wood) and pianist Brian Marsella.
A project of true inclusion, the workshops are open to all, run from 5-8 p.m., and bring participants together in re-discovering the most ancient form of communication: sound.
Instruments are provided. Attendees are invited to bring their own instruments. RSVP and questions can be sent to: [email protected].
The weeklong project will lead to the official opening of a new Artpark Percussion Garden installation on Sunday.
Baptista has collaborated with Buffalo-based sculptor Shasti O'Leary Soudant and students from the University at Buffalo to create a colorful, interactive, sound-generating work called "Beat Blossom" (shown in the photos), as well as an original musical composition created especially for the installation.
The 4 p.m. event will include a concert with Baptista, Martin, UB Percussion Collective and other local musicians. The interactive event is free and open to the public.
Artpark is located at 450 S. Fourth St., Lewiston.
