Obituary: Robert F. Utz

Robert F. Utz, a retired FBI agent, died April 22, 2017, at his home on Grand Island after a brief illness. He was 88.

Utz joined the FBI in 1954 and served in Los Angeles; Richmond, Virginia; and Alexandria, Virginia. He returned to Buffalo in 1967; was senior resident agent at Niagara Falls from 1968-1970; and retired in 1982 as a supervisory special agent in the Buffalo office.

He served as a police instructor for local police agencies in Virginia and New York.

A Kenmore native, Utz was a graduate of Kenmore High School and earned a bachelor's degree in history from Colgate University in 1952. He was a member of the Colgate basketball team for four years and was captain his senior year.

As a young man, Utz worked in the U.S. Merchant Marine on the Great Lakes and was a World War II veteran with the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was a member of the Judges and Police Conference Society; the Men's Sustaining Society of Kenmore Mercy Hospital; local and national chapters of the Former Special Agents of the FBI; and a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Stephen R.C. Church on Grand Island; as well as a many years usher at St. Stephen's.

He played basketball and tennis, golfed with family and friends, and enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's activities. He was inducted into the Kenmore West Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.

Utz is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen, two sons, Robert W. (Maureen) and Thomas C. (Susan); and two daughters, Karen M. and Kristine I. (Donald) Ziemann; and grandchildren, Lyndsey (Kyle) Sauer, Robert C. Utz (fiancé Nicole Sorrentino), Christie (Michael) Davis, Timothy Utz, Sarah Utz, Thomas Utz, Jack Ziemann, and Margaret Ziemann. He was great-grandfather of Logan Sauer; and the brother of Richard (Jean) Utz, and Jack (MaryLou) Utz.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 25 at St. Stephen R.C. Church.
