The Village of Lewiston has been afforded the opportunity to witness a milestone in education. The First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston is celebrating not only the 200th anniversary of the birth of the oldest church in the village, but also the 50th anniversary of its nursery school/pre-K.
Joan Gipp, now deceased, was instrumental in birthing this idea for young children to be educated not just spiritually, but also academically, socially and emotionally.
Many children and their families have walked though the doors to the classroom, and have received quality care, love, security, as well as a solid foundation for their future educational career.
Several teachers have been a part of this program and have touched many lives, including Barbara Glancey, Jeanne Phelps, and Linda Lee with Kathy Fabian.
Currently, Pamela Kilmer holds the reigns to the program.
"I have been truly blessed by the children and the families who have been in my care over the past 10 years," she said. "We teach the all-around child through structure and free time. Academically, we count to 100, know our alphabet and the sounds, sing, cut, glue, paint, color and write. By the time the child approaches kindergarten, he/she should be able to read three-letter words. A whole new world opens up for them.
"We are faith-based with nondenominational prayers, and Biblical stories with values education. Our tuition is very affordable - even less than a day care."
Registration is open now for the 2017-18 school year. Those interested can call the church at 716-754-4945 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays for more information or to schedule a tour.
