Lawnmower Races called 'best ever'

The 2017 edition of the Grand Island Father's Day Lawnmower Races that took place Sunday was called the best ever by race organizers.
"Thank you all for the tremendous event. By far the best ever. We also had the weather on our side," said Gary Roesch of the Lawnmower Race committee. He said there were 22 registered lawnmowers at the starting line.
"All the entrants had an opportunity to race and had plenty of runs on the track. Even had Pete Marston run his snowmobile against the super mods," Roesch said. PJ, Marston's 9-year-old son, ran his junior dragster at 46 mph, Roesch noted.
Results of the races were:
  • Vintage: Mike Yensan
  • Stock: Gary Roesch
  • Modified: Dennis Hagerman
  • Pro Stock: Scott Endres
  • Super Modified: Robbie Schooping
In the celebrity race, Jeanne McNamara and Pam Miller, RNs from Roswell Park Cancer Institute, faced off against each other. The women are Mary Dunbar-Daluisio's nurses and after the race gave tribute to Dunbar-Daluisio, the former chair of the Grand Island Relay For Life, for which the Lawnmower Races is a major fundraiser.
"I am just thrilled that it was such a success and this legacy of Floyd Doring is possible from just old fashioned fun of neighbor and community," Dunbar-Daluisio said. "When we come together for things to give back to one another, it makes our world better everyday."
The annual Grand Island Father's Day Lawn Mower Races and Classic Car Show took place Sunday on the Island's West River Parkway. The event featured races for kids, novices and experts, followed by a celebrity race. Proceeds will benefit the Relay for Life of Grand Island. Jim Mazza shows off his decorated lawn mower.
