Volunteer event celebrates 25th anniversary while connecting volunteers with nonprofit organizations
Local nonprofit organizations are encouraged to submit work projects in need of volunteer labor for the 25th annual United Way Day of Caring, to be held Aug. 16. The largest one-day volunteer event in Western New York is expected to draw thousands of volunteers in celebration of the organization's 100th anniversary and as a way to assist area agencies.
Each year during the Day of Caring, volunteers groups from area employers dedicate time to assist agencies with projects that nonprofits may not have had manpower to handle on their own. As interest has grown in volunteer participation, more projects are needed. The volunteer help allows nonprofit organizations to focus their resources and funding on fulfilling their mission, while volunteers help with projects and facilities improvements that may otherwise fall by the wayside.
501(c)(3) organizations of all types are invited to participate in Day of Caring. In the past, volunteers have painted, landscaped, cleaned, gardened, delivered meals, chaperoned field trips and much more. Wegmans, GEICO, HSBC, National Grid and UAW/GM are the annual sponsors.
Organized by the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, the annual event draws more than 3,000 volunteers to provide their time and manpower to assist dozens of nonprofit organizations of all types. The majority of volunteers participate as part of corporate teams, many of which return year after year to lend a hand. At the same time, local companies and their employees have the opportunity to work together and contribute to local organizations that strengthen the community.
Michael Weiner, United Way of Buffalo & Erie County president and CEO, said, "We anticipate great participation this year as we celebrate our 25th annual Day of Caring and the United Way's 100th anniversary. With so much interest in volunteering, we encourage every nonprofit to consider participating and to take advantage of the added manpower that Day of Caring can provide and to introduce your agency to new volunteers."
To sign up, contact Bernie Miltenberger at [email protected] or 716-887-2746 . The deadline for project submissions is June 30.
