John Jacoby has announced he is a candidate for the Lewiston Town Board. He has the endorsement of the Town of Lewiston Democratic Committee, and will be running for one of two seats on the board to be decided in the November general election.

Jacoby built his own home in Lewiston more than 20 years ago and is a retired battalion chief with the Niagara Falls Fire Department.

"I am excited about the prospect of serving the community I love," he said. "Lewiston faces some difficult challenges, and I believe my experience and understanding of government can help us meet those challenges and make Lewiston a better place for all of us."

Jacoby served on the Niagara Falls Fire Department for 32 years, including one-year as acting fire chief. He was twice recognized with the Levy Award, the fire department's highest honor for valor. Jacoby's responsibilities during his career included preparation of multimillion-dollar budgets, labor negotiations, purchasing and capital projects.

"My career provided me with many experiences and skillsets that can help in dealing with the challenges we face in Lewiston town government today," Jacoby said.

He said bringing financial stability to Lewiston is a top priority.

"We must remember the hundreds of thousands of dollars of town funds squandered on Joseph Davis State Park and plans for an extravagant recreation center the Town Board was prepared to rubber stamp before a public outcry and referendum blocked it," Jacoby said.

He said a town property tax was reinstated this year after a Democratic Town Board eliminated it several years ago.

"We need Town Board members to put in the time and watch what's going on and not simply follow a partisan lockstep in making decisions," Jacoby said.

He said he wants to work with all civic and community organizations to help improve the quality of life in Lewiston.

"We have people from around the world and nation that come here and marvel at the beauty and quaintness of Lewiston," Jacoby said. "We have to improve their experiences while making sure we first preserve the character of our town for our own residents."

Jacoby graduated from LaSalle High School, Niagara County Community College, and earned a BA summa cum laude from the State University of New York in Buffalo.

He is married to the former Eleanor Sparacio. They have a daughter, Julianna, and two grandsons. Jacoby is a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Jacoby said he sees public service as an honor.

"Lewiston has been a great home for my family and has given us so much joy. I wish to give back and share whatever talents and abilities I have with the people of Lewiston," he said.
