Local citizens of all ages are invited to participate in this year's "Flames Through Lewiston" program, which will coincide with the unveiling of the new Tuscarora Heroes Monument on Thursday, Dec. 19. Prizes will be awarded to the actors who best portray the citizens who ran for their lives when the British invaded and turned Lewiston into a pile of ashes exactly 200 years ago to the day.

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the corner of Eighth and Center streets in the Village of Lewiston. The re-enactment will take place regardless of the weather.

Re-enactors are asked to dress in clothes resembling early 18th century styles.

"Most people just put their pajamas on and cover themselves with a blanket," said Claudia Carnes, an event organizer.

The actual attacked occurred at 6 in the morning. Many Lewiston citizens were dressed in their nightclothes and ran through the snow and mud in their bare feet trying to escape. In the past, some re-enactment participants have brought along props such as old wagons and carts. Last year, one of the actors ran down the street carrying a goat.

"We will have prizes for the re-enactors who look terrified," said volunteer director Lee Simonson. "If you know someone who is good at crying and screaming, this could be the opportunity they're looking for."

At least two Lewiston-Porter classes will participate in the re-enactment this year. A parent or teacher should accompany actors under age 12.

This will be highly photographed event, and there will also be prizes for the best still and video photography. If weather permits, video will be taken from a drone helicopter flying over the ceremony.

Those interested in registering to become a part of this historic event are asked to email [email protected] with their name and phone number or contact Carnes at 245-1308 for registration or wardrobe and clothing information. Additional information will be emailed to you as the event draws near.

The Tuscarora Heroes Monument will be unveiled during the re-enactment, which is expected to attract dozens of volunteer actors and more than 2,000 spectators. Center Street between Eighth Street and Portage Road will be closed to traffic for the event.
