Congressman Brian Higgins celebrated Tuesday's release of stronger pilot training requirements by the Federal Aviation Administration.

"As we learned all too well following the crash of Flight 3407, pilot training can mean the difference between life and death," Higgins said. "The flying public owes its thanks to the persistence and tireless advocacy of the dedicated families of those aboard Flight 3407, who never stopped fighting to keep these flight safety reforms a priority in Washington, D.C."

This rule is one of several reforms released by the FAA in response to the legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in August 2010 in the wake of the February 2009 crash of Colgan Flight 3407 in Western New York. It would directly address training for high altitude and autopilot stalls, including the increased use of simulators.

Higgins, as well as the entire Western New York congressional delegation, has fought along with the families of Flight 3407 since 2009 to secure passage of the Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration Extension Act of 2010, in addition to the release and enactment of final rules on pilot qualifications and flight and duty times.
