The New York Power Authority will hold its annual "Halloween Spooktacular" on Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its admission-free Power Vista, the visitors' center for the Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant, 5777 Lewiston Road, Lewiston.

Children up to age 16 will be able participate in a costume contest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., plus enjoy games provided by the Niagara Police Athletic League, crafts from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation's Interpretive Center, visits to the haunted house by the Lockport YMCA's Teen Leaders Group, and free hay rides around the Power Vista traffic circle.

In addition, State Parks will also provide free rides on its Niagara Scenic Trolley between the Gorge Discovery Center and the Power Vista during the event.

Prizes for the contest will be awarded at 2:30 p.m. The contest will include three age groups: newborn to 5 years, 6 to 10 years and 11 to 15 years. Costumes will be judged based on the following categories: originality, creativity and overall appearance.

There's also a serious side to the fun this year. Masons from the New York Masonic Safety ID Program will be on hand to provide parents, guardians, college students and seniors with free safety ID packets. Visitors who sign up will receive a compact disc, personalized with their digital photograph, fingerprints and other vital statistics that can prove to be an invaluable aid to law enforcement in the search for a missing loved one.

In addition to the day's events, guests are invited to enjoy the Power Vista attractions, which include displays and interactive exhibits relating to the production of electricity, energy efficiency and the area's history, as well as unique views from the observation deck 350 feet above the Niagara River Gorge. Parking and admission at the Power Vista is always free.
