On Friday, Oct. 18, at 5:45 p.m. this year's fourth grade class will unveil the first outdoor sculpture at Errick Road Elementary School.

Called "Vertebrate Spines," it is made up of five large spine structures that represent the five categories of vertebrates students learned about in their third grade science unit: mammals, amphibians, fish, reptiles, and birds. Each spine holds 20 carved animals from each of the vertebrate categories. From far away each sculpture looks like a spine, but as the viewer comes closer they will see the "bones" on the spine are really animals the students carved.

Third grade teachers taught them about animal classifications in science, and their art teacher taught them subtractive sculpting techniques so they could carve animals from blocks of clay. The sculptures dried out over the summer, were fired in the kiln this September, then students glazed them. They assembled them onto long steel pipes. The structures were then installed in the inner courtyard at the school by the Niagara-Wheatfield buildings and grounds staff.
