Hundreds of local breast cancer survivors to attend Komen luncheon

This Saturday, hundreds of local Breast Cancer Survivors will attend the annual Susan G. Komen Survivor Luncheon at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. The luncheon begins with a punch reception at 11 a.m.

In the spirit of "Hope, Faith & Love," this annual event is offered free of charge to breast cancer survivors. More than 550 will be in attendance at this year's luncheon, including 275 local breast cancer survivors.

"We have seen this event grow larger each year with more survivors coming to celebrate with their friends and family," said Althea Luehrsen, board president, Western New York Affiliate Susan G. Komen.

The program will include the presentation of the 2013 "Hope, Faith & Love" awards, guest speaker Lesley Zurek, as well as a few fun surprises.

The HOPE Award is given to a breast health or breast cancer professional who works toward improving the lives of breast cancer survivors or conducts research to find the cures. The 2013 HOPE awardee is Maureen Connors, a certified breast navigator with Windsong Radiology Group.

The FAITH Award is given to a breast cancer survivor who advocates in the community for support, screening or treatment, and works to empower all women. The 2013 FAITH awardee is Tandra Parker of Wheatfield, facilitator of the breast support group U2: ABC.

The LOVE Award is given to a volunteer who works tirelessly to advance the Komen "promise" and inspires others to do the same. The 2013 LOVE awardee is Angel Beiter of Amherst, who is employed at Airsep and is a longtime Komen volunteer and ambassador.

The 14th annual Komen WNY Race for the Cure will take place on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at the Delaware Park Rose Gardens.
