Lions Club Picnic - it was top drawer!

Very early Thursday morning, Grand Island Lions growled out of bed and hurried down to the Buffalo Launch Club to make last-minute preparations for entertaining a very special group of visitors. This year's picnic for the blind and handicapped marked the 13th annual affair planned by the local club.

Nick Roeder, one of the original designers of the event, noted that at the first picnic there were some 50 youngsters who came to the Island by bus. Now, in this summer, the group totaled well over 500 guests.

Down on the Launch Club dock, the biggest boats on the river came in to load a precious cargo of children aboard and to afford them the thrill of a lifetime as the large pleasure cruisers pulled out into midstream and headed away from land.

Voters to speak on school propositions

Grand Island residents for at least 30 days and at least 18 years old will be able to vote Wednesday on whether they think schoolchildren living within two miles of their school should ride a school bus. They will also decide whether students should go on educational field trips; school athletes should test their strength and skill against athletes from other schools; new library books and other school equipment should be purchased, and adults should be able to enjoy special evening courses and the use of school buildings for club meetings and community events. The passage of each proposition will increase the tax rate.

Sledding hill to be built in Veterans Park

Fifty loads of 10 cubic yards of dirt have already been delivered to the town by the contractor for Niagara County Water District's water pipeline project for the building of a sledding hill at Veterans Park.

Town board members Monday approved spending up to $7,500 to hire a bulldozer to build the hill behind the Grand Island Memorial Library in Veterans Park on Bedell Road. The hill is part of the master plan for the park and will also be used as an outdoor amphitheater for town activities.

First-ever Rotary Lobsterfest fundraiser a tremendous success

With neighboring Rotary Clubs in Western New York and Canada holding highly successful Lobsterfest events to raise money for charitable projects, the Grand Island Rotary Club, which has been serving the community for more than 40 years, recently held its first ever Lobsterfest fundraiser. The all-you-can-eat lobster extravaganza, which was held at the Buffalo Launch Club picnic pavilion, saw more than 150 people turn out in support of the many fine Rotary community service projects, which include tree and daffodil plantings, extensive scholarship and student exchange programs, hospital construction, nutrition assistance, and the Rotary's fight against polio worldwide. With the first-ever event proving such a success, expectations are high for what the future will bring.
