The fifth annual Jason Raby Memorial 5K Race and one-mile Fun Walk is being held at Lewiston-Porter Senior High School on Saturday, July 27, at 11 a.m. The event will be held in honor of Jason Raby, who graduated from Lewiston-Porter High School in 2001 and suddenly passed away at the young age of 25 while playing basketball at Niagara University in 2008.

During his time at Lewiston-Porter, Raby epitomized the ideals of hard work, commitment and dedication. Thus, the Lewiston-Porter Alumni Association has sponsored the Jason Raby Memorial 5K run and one-mile walk since 2009. Raby was an outstanding cross country, track and basketball athlete throughout both his high school and college careers.

Raby's life provides a great example for all members of Lewiston-Porter, the Western New York and Southern Ontario running communities. His father, Gary Raby Sr., and sister, Jennifer, are Lew-Port grads and longtime cross country and track-and-field coaches at Lew-Port. Their commitment to the school, and to their love of family and societal unity, is on display in their efforts to give back to the community. They have established this run as a very special event over the years.

The Jason Raby 5K brings a unique, family atmosphere to running. It brings all people together, regardless of abilities or background, through a common love for running, which inspires a common goal to work hard. Jason would be so proud and would have smiled all through this year's event to know how large his new community family can, and has grown.

The race will begin and end on the Lew-Port campus, and the racecourse is flat and fast. The post-race party will include food, prizes and live music.

The proceeds from the race support the many scholarship programs sponsored by the Lewiston-Porter Alumni Association.
