FASNY launches new online training tool to boost recruitment efforts

Building on FASNY's new media and digital platforms, the volunteer programs office has rolled out an online video training program aimed at increasing the number of volunteer firefighters statewide.

This effort is the latest component of a larger recruitment campaign funded by a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant.

"While our 'Train the Recruiter' sessions across the state were successful, we were only able to reach a select group of individuals who could physically attend. This new video will broaden our reach to all members of the fire service and ensure they have the resources to go out in their communities and recruit new members," said FASNY President James Burns.

Thevideo was shot during a "Train the Recruiter" presentation conducted by Liz Cahill at the Fayetteville Fire Department in Onondaga County. During the presentation, which was one of 135 conducted throughout the state, the audience of firefighters and line officers were given an overview highlighting a number of strategies and tools aimed at attracting recruits and how to take advantage of FASNY's "FireInYou" mass media awareness campaign.

 The video provides viewers with tips and best practices on how to successfully mount a recruitment campaign, including:

• The use of outreach materials and strategy (news releases, advertising, etc.);
• Obtaining free "Fire In You" resources;
• Organizing and implementing department recruitment activities;
• Retaining volunteer firefighters through FASNY's community college tuition reimbursement program, FASNY HELP:
• How to "plug-in" to FASNY's volunteer programs office for support

After the viewer concludes the video, he will receive a certificate recognizing the completion of the online course.
