Concerts, lectures and fitness sessions complement an already full season

Large-scale concerts, more lectures, new fitness sessions, and more family-friendly activities have been added to Old Falls Street, USA's, list of free summer activities for 2013. These activites round-out an already full schedule in downtown Niagara Falls.

Just announced are "Saturdays on Old Falls Street Concerts," a two-week concert series held on Saturday, July 20, featuring the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and on Saturday, July 27, featuring 10,000 Maniacs. Each free show will be held from 5 to 10 p.m.

The BPO performance features the music of John Williams, Academy and Grammy award-winning composer of "Superman," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial," "Star Wars," the "Harry Potter" movies and many other notable Hollywood films. In addition, the evening will feature a special live performance by the members of LehrerDance of Buffalo.

July 27 will feature national recording artists 10,000 Maniacs, a band originally formed in Jamestown and known for such hits as "Because the Night," "These Are Days," and "What's the Matter Here." The band is currently on tour in support of its album, "Music From The Motion Picture," its first new release in 14 years. The evening will also feature three Western New York-based bands: Aircraft, The Albrights and The Tins.

Western New York's Slyboots performers will open each concert. Old Falls Street's food and beverage carts and favorite Amy's Truck will be on hand to provide food vending throughout the evenings.

Just added is "Fitness on Old Falls," complimentary fitness sessions held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings in July and August, on Old Falls Street's middle block. Wednesdays feature yoga, from 5 to 6 p.m., and Thursdays feature "Fusion," a cross-training program, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Classes are taught by trained instructors. No registration is needed. Guests are encouraged to bring a yoga mat or towel to lay on, as well as a bottle of water, sunglasses and sunscreen, and a face towel to make their workouts more enjoyable.

Also added are new lectures to be held on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. at Old Falls Street's Wi-Fi Café area, closest to Niagara Falls State Park. The lecture series features local authors, who will speak on a variety of topics and sign copies of their books. In case of inclement weather, the lectures will be held in the neighboring Barnes & Noble store, located inside the Culinary Institute Niagara Falls.

The remaining schedule of lectures includes the following:

  • July 17 - Joan Graci, author of "No More Bad Advice"
  • August 7 - Nancy Rizzo, author of "Speaking Your Truth"
  • Aug. 14 - Tom Registad, author of "Scriblin' For a Livin' - Mark Twain's Pivotal Period in Buffalo"
  • Aug. 21 - Chris Stoainoff, co-author of "Niagara Falls 1850-2000"

Afternoons also feature "Backyard Board Games," giant versions of popular games such as chess, checkers and other trademarked favorites, offered free of charge on Old Falls Street's middle block from 11 a.m to 4 p.m., with extended hours during certain evening events. Guests are also encouraged to borrow traditional chess, checkers and backgammon games from Old Falls Street's vending carts located at the Wi-Fi Café, each Wednesday through Sunday, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This additional programming complements Old Falls Street's other weekly activities, which include "Food Truck Mondays and Tuesdays" featuring Amy's Truck and the Roaming Buffalo; visits by Encounter Niagara's historical re-enactors, the "Flicks on Old Falls" movie series on Thursday evenings, the "Fridays on Old Falls" evening concert series and the "Jazzy Sundays" afternoon concert series.

Other returning favorites are the annual "Touch-a-Truck" family event where children are able to sit inside several emergency and maintenance vehicles, on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 2 to 5 p.m. The summer season ends with the ever-popular Niagara Falls Blues Festival. Celebrating its sixth year, the Blues Festival will be held on Labor Day weekend - Aug. 31 through Sept. 1.
