The Healthcare Association of New York State, on June 28, presented its 2013 Distinguished Service Award - the organization's top honor - to Daniel Sisto, HANYS' president, who is retiring from HANYS after 29 years of contributions to health care in New York.

"For the past three decades, Dan has been a singular force in New York - and nationally - working to improve health care," said HANYS board Chairman Joseph McDonald, president and CEO of Catholic Health System in Buffalo. "As president of HANYS, Dan has worked tirelessly to protect and support New York's non-profit health care provider institutions and ensure they can fulfill their mission of caring for all. He has been at the forefront in the fight to ensure patient access to care, increase insurance coverage, and improve care quality."

Sisto has been a powerful advocate for change, and with the advent of health care reform he helped shape the future of health care delivery in New York state. He played a key role in the governor's Medicaid redesign team and recognized the transformative nature of the Affordable Care Act and the need for providers to explore new models of care delivery. Today, New York's providers are leaders in developing and implementing new models of coordinated care and innovative collaborative arrangements.

Through his leadership, Sisto built HANYS into the nation's premier state health care association. He guided the transformation of a 220-member hospital association to a 500-member organization that spans the spectrum of not-for-profit health care providers. Under Sisto's vision, HANYS became the leader in terms of advocacy, influence, trust, innovation, data, and product development and dissemination.

Sisto joined HANYS in 1984 as senior vice president and chief operating officer of its consulting arm and was named president of HANYS in 1986. Before joining HANYS, Sisto served as executive vice president of Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council and former deputy director of Nassau-Suffolk Health Systems Agency.

Since 1979, HANYS' Distinguished Service Award has recognized individuals who demonstrate their extraordinary commitment to improving health care through service. The award was presented at HANYS' 45th annual membership conference.

In addition, Sisto was presented with a legislative resolution from the New York State Legislature and a message entered into the congressional record by the New York state congressional delegation, thanking him for his service and wishing him well on his retirement.

HANYS is the only statewide hospital and continuing care association in New York, representing 500 non-profit and public hospitals, health systems, nursing homes, home care agencies, and other health care organizations.
