The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston, in partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Stamford, Ontario, held a ceremony Monday to rededicate a peace plaque that was established by the two clubs 50 years ago on the Lewiston Queenston International Bridge.
The plaque was established as a symbol of international peace and goodwill between nations.
"Through this ceremony, we seek to honor and celebrate our past and renew our commitment to international friendship and peace through Kiwanis," said Jeff Sanderson, president of the Lewiston club. "We seek to recreate the scene on June 10 in 1963 when Kiwanis leaders and dignitaries from both sides of the border gathered to bear witness to this historic gesture of friendship."
Local leaders were on hand at the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission headquarters to mark the event. They were joined by Kiwanians, members of the NFBC, and three very special guests: Lewiston Kiwanis members Richard Soluri and George Curtis, who were on hand at the 1963 meeting; and Leon Keith, who is a charter member of the Stamford club.
