Two first-time events are scheduled this June to assist the Niagara County SPCA. One involves taking a walk in Hyde Park in Niagara Falls. The other is a firefighter competition, part of a five-day jamboree set for the old Summit Park Mall.

The SPCA's first Hyde Park Hound Hike will be Saturday, June 1, held in memory of Pascal "Pat" Scrufari, who lost his life on Feb. 15, 2012, after trying to rescue one of his golden retrievers from the icy waters of Hyde Park Lake. The dogs will lead the walk with their adopter, firefighter Frank Cacciatore of the Niagara Falls Fire Department.

Join as an individual or as a member of a team and collect sponsors. Register the day of the event or online and find more information at www.niagaraspca.org. Registration fee is $20.

Dogs are welcome on the 1.5-mile walk, but should be vaccinated and friendly with people and other dogs.

•On June 22 and 23, the Niagara County SPCA will host the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge at the former mall, 6929 Williams Road.

The individual competition will start at 1 p.m. Saturday. The tandem and team relays begin at noon Sunday.

Firefighters will compete in a five-evolution event, which includes a five-story tower climb with high-rise pack, hose hoist, forcible entry, hose advance and victim rescue. Competitions will include individual, team, tandem and relay. Firefighters will vie for times, points and placement qualifying them for the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge World Challenge, to be held in Las Vegas in October.

This will be the first time the event will be held in Western New York. It will be part of the five-day Niagara County SPCA Jamboree held June 19-23 in the one-time mall parking lot. The event includes a carnival with amusement rides, a Celtic festival, food vendors, beer tent and nightly concerts. Admission to the jamboree (which includes the Firefighter Challenge) is $20 for one adult admission for a day pass or all five days for $75 for one adult.
