Appointed as Town of Lockport attorney

Michael J. Norris, who has served as Niagara County Republican chairman since November 2009, announced Wednesday he is leaving the position of county chairman effective immediately.

Earlier in the day, the Lockport Town Board appointed Norris as the Town of Lockport town attorney. Norris is also a partner in the law firm of Seaman, Norris, & Benedict LLP.

Norris offered the following statement:

"It has truly been a privilege and honor to serve as the Niagara County Republican chairman for the past three and one half years, and it certainly has been an exciting chapter in my life. However, with my appointment today as Town of Lockport attorney, a new chapter begins.

"The position of town attorney will require me to commit a significant of my time and energy to providing legal services to the Town of Lockport. There are only so many hours in one day.

"Being chairman of the Niagara County Republican Committee is very demanding and requires a leader who can devote a great amount of effort to our organization. I have worked tirelessly as chairman but, with my additional professional obligations, it is simply not viable to maintain this level of involvement, and it is not in my nature to do a job in a half-hearted manner. Therefore, I have concluded that the right thing to do is to pass the torch to a new leader at this time.

"I would like to thank State Sen. George Maziarz, Chairman Emeritus Henry Wojtaszek, vice chairmen Scott Kiedrowski and James Heuer, Secretary Marcus Hall, Treasurer Ross Annable, the town and city chairpersons, members of the executive and County Republican Committee, Elections Commissioner Mary Ann Casamento and her staff, all Republican elected officials who represent Niagara County, State Chairman Ed Cox and his staff, fellow Republican county chairman from Western New York, and the hundreds of financial supporters and volunteers who I have had the pleasure to interact with as chairman and for all that you do to make our Republican organization succeed here in Niagara County and Western New York. We have a tremendous team, and it is one that we should all be very proud to be a part of.

"President George H.W. Bush once said, 'The new breeze blows, a page turns, the story unfolds.'

"So, please know that as this chapter ends and a new one begins for both me and the Niagara County GOP, I have valued the trust that you have placed in me; I worked very hard to make our organization stronger; I pledge to offer my full assistance to ensure a smooth transition; and I am extremely grateful to each and every one of you who helped in so many countless ways to make my tenure as chairman a most successful, fulfilling and enjoyable one."
