The Niagara County Community College horticulture program received three awards at the Western New York State Nursery & Landscape Association annual garden and landscape show, Plantasia.

The event was held March 21-24 at the Hamburg fairgrounds.

Horticulture students and faculty from NCCC and the McKinley adult horticulture education program worked together to build a main garden space as part of the competition against local landscape companies. NCCC won Best Water Feature in a small garden, Best Small Garden, and the Buffalo Spree Choice Award.

The garden focused on edibles in the landscape as well as upcycling materials like pallets, wine corks, wire hangers, and tin cans. The water feature, crafted by NCCC adjunct instructor Tom Mitchell and his wife Erica, is an aquaponics system with LED grow lights and goldfish and uses pallets for the structure.

"This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to use the plant knowledge, design principles and professional skills that they have learned at NCCC," horticulture program coordinator Carolyn Stanko said. "Our students participate in numerous events with the WNYSNLA, which strongly supports our program with scholarships, internship, and employment opportunities."
