The UB Theatre & Dance Department at the University at Buffalo will present Zodiaque Dance Ensemble, "Spring!" on April 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m., and April 20 and 21 at 2 p.m., in the Black Box Theatre, located at the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

Zodiaque Dance Ensemble, directed by assistant professor Anne Burnidge, is one of UB's resident student dance companies. "Spring!" showcases the diverse works of three guest artists. New choreography by Nancy Hughes, local Buffalo contact improvisation artist, will be accompanied by that of two UB alumnae, Gina Pero, a former Rockette, and Cheryl Johnson, a Rochester tap dance artist. In addition, faculty member Anne Burnidge and five advanced choreography students (Jenny Alperin, Melissa Hunt, Kate Kenyon, Taylor Lipsey and Ashley Peters) will present new works.

The company, consisting of 26 undergraduate dance majors, will spring into action as it embodies a spectrum of current dance styles, ranging from hip-hop to Broadway to post-modern contact improvisation. Tightrope, by Cheryl Johnson, is a rhythm tap dance influenced by Nik Wallenda's June tightrope walk across Niagara Falls and by the 2012 Marcus Miller recording of Janelle Monae's tune "Tightrope." Other works take inspiration from sources including the shapes and sounds of the acoustic harp guitar, the structure of DNA, and humanistic themes of struggle, faith, compassion and finding strength from within.

Tickets for Zodiaque Dance Ensemble are $20 general admission and $10 for students and seniors. They are available at the Center Box Office (weekdays) and tickets.com. To charge tickets, call 1-888-223-6000. For more information, call 716-645-2787 or visit www.ubcfa.org.
