Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-C-Lewiston, helped pass legislation he co-sponsored to support the development of the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad as a premier destination for both academic research and tourism.

The bill (A.05052) gives the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Commission additional time to assist local agencies with the initial implementation of the management plan.

"The Underground Railroad is an important part of the Niagara Falls' and this nation's historic and cultural history," Ceretto said. "This bill will help to ensure that the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage corridor becomes an integral part of the region's tourism industry while providing students and visitors with vast information regarding one of our nation's most significant historical events."

Ceretto noted the commission's extension coincides with redevelopment plans of the Robert Moses Parkway, which includes an Underground Railroad museum near the Whirlpool Bridge (one of the main Underground Railroad routes into Canada).

"The museum and other projects being planned by the commission will help to showcase the rich and diverse history of African Americans, while highlighting their strong heritage and cultural impact on Western New York," Ceretto said.
