Congressman Brian Higgins, NY-26, voted in support of S. 74, the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Thursday. The bill had previously passed in the Senate with a vote of 78-22 and now heads to the White House for the president's signature.
"I was proud to support this strong bipartisan legislation, which expands basic protections under the law to ensure that all victims of domestic violence and sexual assault can receive the care and the services that they need," said Higgins, a member of the House victims' rights caucus.
S. 74 extends VAWA protections to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, in addition to Native American and immigrant victims. It also includes new provisions for addressing domestic violence on college campuses, reducing the backlog of untested DNA evidence in rape kits, and protecting victims of human trafficking.
