Obit: Jan Madejski

Born in Buffalo on Feb. 20, 1933, Jan Madejski died peacefully at his home in Grand Island on Feb. 12, 2013, surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rose Mary (Crimaldi) Madejski and his children, Dr. Thomas (Sandra) Madejski, Linda (Pantelis) Panteli and Dr. Mary Ann (George) Spanos. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren: Pano (Teo) Spanos, Kypros Panteli, Jan Panteli, Thomas Spanos, Gregory Madejski, James Madejski, Giovanni Madejski, Jacqueline Madejski, Joseph Madejski, and Chryssie Rose Panteli.

Jan trained as an optician and served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War trained at Fort Belvoir and was stationed in St Louis, Mo., from 1953-55. Following his military service, he enrolled at the University of Buffalo, graduating from the School of Pharmacy in 1959.

Jan and his wife owned Herman-Stall Pharmacy, 251 Forest Ave., in Buffalo for more than 30 years. Jan was very active in his profession on a local and state level. He was a former president of the Erie County Pharmaceutical Association, and served on the New York State Board of Pharmacy, and was chairman of the Board of Pharmacy. He was a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, and is a James B. West Fellow of the Iroquois Trail Council in Batavia.

Jan had many diverse interests which he passed on to his children and grandchildren, including his Polish heritage and a lifelong love of music. He sang with the City Choir as a youth, and was the only non-physician member of The Singing Doctor's performance group in the 1980s. Annually, Jan and Rose Mary hosted singing parties where family and friends gathered around a great meal and then sang tunes ranging from Broadway musicals to Belafonte's Calypso music or Polish songs. Jan loved exploring other cultures and traveled extensively with his wife as well as serving on the welcoming committee for Buffalo's International Institute hosting dignitaries from foreign lands.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, Feb. 16, at St. Stephen R.C. Church. Friends were received at Kaiser Funeral Home on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Stephen R.C. Church, 2100 Baseline Road, Grand Island, NY, 14072, or the Boy Scouts of America Iroquois Trail Council, 45 Liberty St., Batavia.
